Drama therapy is the intentional use of dramatic processes such as improvisation, mask work, puppetry, roles, and play for therapeutic means.
Contrary to popular thought, drama therapy isn’t just for children, but can be highly beneficial for adults who have experienced trauma across the lifespan.
One of the core needs that we have as a child from our caregivers is that we are encouraged to play, use our imagination, and be silly.
This is so often overlooked, and truly is a core developmental need.
If you didn’t have that growing up, you deserve to have this developmental need addressed now.
All sessions are currently virtual.
For drama therapy, I can see clients across most states, excluding New York State.
Integral to drama therapy is the idea of play, and that by engaging with our capacity to play we are engaging and strengthening our spontaneity and creativity.
The effects of trauma does the exact opposite of this- traumatic stress limits self-expression, disconnects the self from your own intuition, prioritizes survival over connection, and inhibits the ability to take helpful risks in life. I use a variety of drama therapy approaches including Developmental Transformations, psychodrama, storytelling, and role work.
Engaging and strengthening your creative voice and process, in itself, is the antidote to traumatic stress.
It engages self-expression, helps bring your inner experience tangibly out, and helps you experiment with taking creative risks in the safe enough environment of play and improvisation.
My approach to drama therapy is trauma-focused, with specific skills and training to work through the nuances of working with the psychological effects of trauma.
My approach to integrating drama therapy into trauma work is focused on:
Helping you increase your creativity and spontaneity in your daily life
The idea that imagination and playfulness are core human needs at all stages of life
You, I will meet you where you are at, and we will explore multiple drama therapy modalities to see which is the best fit for you
Helping you have a safe enough space in the realm of play to explore new possibilities in life that feel too overwhelming in the outside world
Increasing a sense of connection with you, yourself and the wider world through metaphor, storytelling, and creativity
Drama therapy might be a good fit for you if:
-

You grew up with a family that didn’t know how to play or didn’t allow you to play
-

You want to become more spontaneous, creative, and playful in life today
-

You have a rich inner life that you don’t get to express day-to-day in your work, family, or life
-

Want to use your whole self in the room & talking alone doesn’t feel satisfying
You deserve access to imagination, playfulness, and spontaneity.

The Connection to Persephone
Stories connect us to who we are today, where we have come from, and the imagination of our ancestors.
Stories convey a depth of experiences and feelings that facts and data alone cannot. That’s why we’ve told Persephone’s story throughout this website. The stories that are passed down century after century carry core seeds of human experience with depth and insight, and can help us see ourselves today through different perspectives.
